transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation (tDCS) in Depression

southern-courier.whereilive.com.au, September 2011

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) of the prefrontal cortex has been proposed as a therapeutic intervention in major depression without serious side effects. Outcomes from two new randomized controlled studies (Dr. Padberg, Munich) and (Prof. Loo, Sydney) are very promising, showing clinically meaningful improvements in patients with depression. Further clinical studies are required. A new multicenter trial has just started recruiting around 120 people to receive tDCS for 20 minutes, five times a week over four to eight weeks.
